Silk Weaving Industry of Assam: Challenges and Recovery in the Post-Lockdown Era
Main Article Content
Abstract
Assam's silk weaving industry has long been an integral part of its cultural and economic identity, producing high-quality handloom silk fabrics. This study assesses the current working performance of various silk weaving entities in the post-lockdown period. A sample of 120 wage weavers, 100 independent weavers, and 80 master weavers was selected to analyze their operational challenges. The study also outlines the organizational structure of the silk industry in Assam. Key issues identified include reduced demand, declining sales, low profits, working capital deficiencies, idle looms, and manpower shortages. The rising cost of silk yarn further aggravates production challenges. While these issues were heightened during the pandemic, they remain relevant as the industry continues to recover and rebuild. This study highlights the need for targeted interventions to address these structural weaknesses, such as improving access to capital, modernizing production methods, and expanding market reach. Strengthening the resilience of Assam’s silk weaving industry is essential for its future sustainability and growth in an increasingly competitive global market.
