Burning Questions: Exploring the Future of Waste Management
Main Article Content
Abstract
The future of waste management presents critical challenges in our rapidly urbanizing and industrializing world, necessitating innovative approaches and comprehensive strategies. This study assesses waste management technologies and evaluates policies and community engagement strategies across Bangladesh, the UK, USA, and India from 2019 to 2023. Key findings reveal Bangladesh's decline in efficiency and sustainability from an initial value of 100 in 2019 to 57 in 2023, while the UK showed consistent improvement, reaching 100 in 2022 and 2023. The USA had a steady increase, peaking at 100 in 2022 before a slight drop to 95 in 2023, and India exhibited fluctuations, peaking at 100 in 2020 and ending at 81 in 2023. Evaluation of policies and community engagement strategies showed Bangladesh peaking in 2020 (100) but declining to 31 in 2023, India showing continuous improvement to a perfect score in 2023, and the USA and UK demonstrating stable high performance, peaking at 100 in 2022. The effectiveness and sustainability of new waste management technologies fluctuated for Bangladesh, with the highest effectiveness in 2019 (100) and the lowest in 2022 (49), while India peaked in 2020 (100) but struggled to maintain this, and the USA and UK showed consistent upward trends, peaking at 100 in 2022 and 2023, respectively. The effectiveness of current waste management policies and regulations fluctuated for Bangladesh, starting at 100 in 2019 and dropping in subsequent years, while India peaked at 100 in 2023, and the USA and UK showed stable performance, reflecting effective waste management practices. This comparative analysis highlights the need for Bangladesh to adopt more consistent and long-term strategies to enhance its waste management systems, drawing lessons from the stable and effective practices observed in the UK and USA, providing valuable insights for policymakers and industry leaders aiming to foster resilient and sustainable waste management systems globally.
