Legal Analysis of Crime Against Rural Women in Thane District With Emphasis On Women’s Safety, Exploitation Stages And Their Socioeconomic Impact

Abstract

This article explores the critical issue of women’s safety in rural Maharashtra, focusing on the rising incidents of gender-based violence, harassment, and exploitation of women in the region. The rural women of Maharashtra, especially in economically underdeveloped districts, experience an array of challenges rooted in patriarchal structures, low literacy rates, economic dependency, and cultural taboos, which perpetuate domestic abuse, dowry-related violence, and sexual harassment. Drawing on data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) and other credible sources, this study assesses the current legal framework for the protection of women and the challenges to its effective implementation. The analysis highlights the gaps in law enforcement, lack of awareness, and cultural resistance that prevent many rural women from accessing justice and protection. Finally, the study provides recommendations for policy reforms and strategies to improve the safety and welfare of women in rural areas.
