Abstract

This research examines the significant impact of the mother tongue on the process of teaching and learningthe English language. Acknowledging the intricacies of language acquisition, the study delves into thecomplex interaction between the native language and English across linguistic, cognitive, and culturaldimensions. By synthesizing existing literature and empirical evidence, the research aims to elucidate the waysin which the mother tongue influences individuals' journeys in acquiring English as a second language.A focal point of this investigation is linguistic transfer, analyzed in terms of its positive and negative effectson language proficiency. The study explores how learners utilize their mother tongue to understand andproduce English, highlighting instances of transfer that aid language acquisition as well as those that presentobstacles. Cognitive processes are examined to understand the mechanisms involved in constructinggrammatical structures, acquiring vocabulary, and refining pronunciation through the influence of the mothertongue
