A Study On The Facilitating Role Of Clearing And Forwarding Agents In Export Business: Identifying Key Factors

Abstract

This study explores the essential roles of clearing and forwarding agents in facilitating export business, specifically in the Thoothukudi district of India. With the increasing complexity of global trade, the effectiveness of these intermediaries in managing customs compliance, logistics, and documentation is crucial. The study addresses the problem of limited understanding of how these agents contribute to efficient export operations. Its objective is to identify and analyze the key factors that define their roles, thereby enhancing the efficiency and regulatory compliance of export activities. A descriptive research design was utilized, involving a sample of 412 export business owners from Thoothukudi, selected via snowball sampling. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to identify the distinct roles of clearing and forwarding agents. The results identified five major roles for clearing agents, such as Customs Compliance and Documentation and Customs Clearance and Problem Resolution, and six key roles for forwarding agents, including Logistics and Transport Coordination and Risk and Financial Management. The findings highlight the importance of deeper collaboration between export businesses and these agents to optimize supply chain efficiency and enhance competitiveness in the global market. Additionally, the study suggests that policymakers can use these insights to streamline trade regulations and improve facilitation measures. This research underscores the critical role of clearing and forwarding agents in ensuring the smooth operation of export processes, offering a valuable basis for future studies in international trade logistics.
