Abstract

This present study on the Use of Social Networking Sites by the Engineering Students of Assam University, Silchar, is based on the 110 respondents responses received on the questionnaires. The survey was conducted from January –April 2018, and the purposive sampling technique was adopted for collecting the data. The study highlights the level of awareness, preference of social networking sites, preferred place, preferred time to access, and preferred interface to access the social networking sites. It also examines the impact of social networking sites on academic achievements and psychological issues arising out of excessive use of social networking sites. The studys findings are fascinating and reveal that most male students use SNSs, especially Facebook. Further, the Smartphone is a preferred device to access social networking sites. Besides, many respondents were noted to have multiple IDsto createtheir profiles to remain connected with their friends and family members. They also felt that excessive use of social networking sites makes them sleepy and tired. 52% of respondents think that the Use of SNSs positively impacts academic achievements. However, the students suggested the Departmental and Central Library adopt Social Networking Sites like Facebook. WhatsApp to keep them updated regarding the activities of the library services.
